Efficient logistics for Papierholz Austria

For 20 years, Papierholz Austria has relied on the logistics expertise of ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) for the transport of wood and wood chips.

Papierholz Austria GmbH is a wood purchasing company and sees itself as a link between forest owners and the wood processing industry. With a turnover of 491 million euros and 54 employees, the company has sites in Frantschach, Gratkorn and Pöls.

A reliable partner for many years

RCG transports wood chips and logs for Papierholz Austria by sustainable rail. Thanks to close cooperation and RCG's tailor-made logistics solutions, the company is able to achieve its sustainable transport goals and make a significant contribution to reducing its carbon footprint. The receiving mills receive the majority of their logs and wood chips from Austria. The additional demand is covered by neighbouring countries. In 2023, this amounted to around 755,000 tonnes of wood chips and 440,000 tonnes of roundwood by sustainable rail. This not only benefits Papierholz Austria, but also the environment – as almost 34,000 tonnes of CO2 were saved.

The importance of transhipment platforms

In connection with transport, transshipment platforms for pre-storage and interim storage of roundwood, such as Papierholz Austria’s hubs in Amstetten and Fürnitz, are becoming increasingly important. On the one hand, this ensures a continuous supply to the receiving mills and, on the other hand, it allows the company to utilise purchasing opportunities for larger volumes of wood on the market. In Hungary, Papierholz Austria operates a transshipment platform for wood chips and pulpwood in Jak-Balongunyom, which is scheduled to start rail operations in the first quarter of 2025. This platform will mainly supply the Sappi mill in Gratkorn.
